Henry
It was December 3, 2008 (two weeks before delivery) and I was instructed to have another follow-up echo done of my baby's heart. Like the last echo, I thought it would be ok, but from that moment on my life changed forever. The doctor that performed the echo told us that he has Tatrology of Fallot. The doctor continued to inform us of the details of the condition. I was in shock, how can this happen. The other echo turned out fine. The doctor told us the information and left it at that. I didn't know what to do. I felt guilty that I could have caused this and I was so scared to know if my baby would be ok.
Two more weeks went by and I was endused on December 18th. The whole NICU team was there for the delivery to make sure everything went smoothly. On December 19th and 1:03p my Henry came into the world. I only got to hold him a moment before they whisked him away to the NICU. After what seemed like an eternity the doctor came back with some better news. Henry did not have Tatrology of Fallot, but a VSD. Immediately we met with a cardiologist. He confirmed the VSD and proposed that he have surgery at 3 or 4 months of age.
On April 13th Henry went into Children's Hospital of Michigan for open heart surgery to repair his VSD and smaller ASD. It was the scariest thing I had ever been through. The surgery went well and the doctor informed us that the VSD was the size of a quarter. The hole was patched, the valve fixed and smaller ASD patched up as well. Thank God for the PICU nurses at the hospital. They took such good care of him. By day 4 he was smiling again. I had witnessed a mircle. My son is now 6 almost 7 months old and very healthy. With luck his heart will be fixed completely.
God Bless,
Allison
